GUERILLA GRAFFITI
Article on AlJazeera (external link)My guerrilla graffiti interventions respond directly to the visible traces of war in Beirut. Because we encounter them every day, on almost every street, they gradually become part of us. In my first public art intervention, I painted around bullet holes and missile marks, reshaping walls and places that had become symbols of wars and collective memory.
Some of these interventions are performative, combining painting with physical risk and movement. At the Holiday Inn Beirut, I climbed the 118-metre-high, war-scarred building to create graffiti directly on its façade.
The act of climbing became part of the artwork, confronting the building’s violent history through the presence of a living body.
